2. Suno Basic Usage Tutorial

Suno provides two primary song generation methods: Basic Mode and Custom Mode.

2.1 Basic Mode

Basic Mode is ideal for quick song generation with minimal effort:

  1. Simply enter your prompt in the input box
  2. Choose whether to enable Instrumental mode: Disabled by default, enabling will generate instrumental music without vocals.

Prompt Writing Tips

Method 1: Write Your Own Prompts
  • Simple Prompts: You can start with just a basic description, for example, “Write a song about not wanting to go to work”.
  • Advanced Prompts: For more accurate results that match your expectations, we recommend including the following elements in your prompt:
    • Voice type: Male voice, female voice, male singer, female singer, etc.
    • Language: Mandarin, Cantonese, English, Japanese, etc.
    • Music style: KPOP, JPOP, electronic, Lo-Fi, piano, violin, upbeat, hip-hop, etc.
    • Mood and atmosphere: Happy, melancholic, peaceful, energetic, etc.
    • Tempo and rhythm: Fast tempo, slow tempo, etc.
    • Specific instruments or elements: For example, “with piano and violin melody” or “with classical and bass background rhythm”

Example prompt:

Create a pop song with a light guitar melody, themed around not wanting to go to work, sung by a male voice with Mandarin lyrics.

Method 2: Use Tools to Assist with Prompt Generation

You can also use specialized Suno-optimized prompt generation tools to get more professional prompts.

2.2 Custom Mode

Toggle the “Custom” switch to enter Custom Mode, which provides more refined creative control across three main modules:

2.2.1 Lyrics

There are four ways to generate lyrics:

  1. Use lyrics from existing songs, poetry, or any text (note copyright issues, commercial use requires authorization)
  2. Write your own original lyrics
  3. Use Suno’s random lyric generation: Click “Full Song”, enter a prompt or click random generate
  4. Use AI tools to assist with lyric generation

Example prompt:

Please help me write lyrics for a pop song about youth, with 3 verses plus a chorus, positive and uplifting mood, and simple, catchy language style.

2.2.2 Style of Music

  • We recommend filling this out in English for more accurate and stable generation results
  • You can specify a single style or mix multiple styles
  • If you like the melody and genre of a particular song, you can copy the song link to a music analysis website to get a professional style description, then copy it into Suno.

2.2.3 More Options

  • Excluded Styles: Specify music styles you don’t want
  • Add Audio: Upload your draft melody for AI to refine
  • Add Characters: Ideal for multi-voice chorus songs, you can assign different roles to perform different parts

3. Advanced Suno Usage Techniques

After generating a song, you can perform many advanced operations to improve your creative efficiency and work quality.

3.1 Editing Songs

Click the three dots on the right side of any generated song to access various editing operations:

  • Modify song title and cover art
  • Clip song segments
  • Regenerate the song
  • Extend song length
  • Download and share, etc.

3.2 Advanced Feature: Meta Tags

Meta tags are special instructions written within lyrics that allow for more precise control over the music generation effect.

  • Format: Represented using square brackets []
  • Official recommendation: Keep meta tags simple, around 3 tags work best
  • Example: [classical piano sad verse]

Meta Tag Types

  1. Structure Meta Tags: Used to control song structure

    • [Intro]: Introduction
    • [Verse]: Verse section
    • [Chorus]: Chorus section
    • [Bridge]: Bridge section
    • [Outro]: Outro/Ending
  2. Instrument Meta Tags: Specify instruments to use, we recommend using these cautiously as they may limit Suno’s creative potential.

  3. Vocal Style Meta Tags: Used to add vocal modifications and enrich musical dynamics, represented using parentheses ().

    • Examples: (Ooh), (Yeah)

3.3 How to Modify Lyrics in Generated Songs

If you are satisfied with the melody of a generated song but want to modify some lyrics, follow these steps:

  1. Click the three dots on the right side of the generated song
  2. Select “Song Editor” >> “Replace Section”
  3. Make specific lyric modifications in the editing interface

Note: This is a premium feature that requires an active subscription to use.
